This project was dear to us as it was an opportunity to explore our AI workflows and deal with fully synthetic data to create new AI Models.

The requirements were very different as we had to evolve as the film moves forward and turn our more "alien" self into a more human person; therefore, our AI output had to be tweaked shot by shot and make it at the same time obvious for the audience they were not looking at a normal person at first, but an stylisation of one.

The process involved training from scratch an AI model with data from fully synthetic generated material that was processed to create a full dataset consisting of around 8000 images in the end. Once trained, we could produce it on a shot-by-shot basis and tweak the training as well to produce a more or less realistic face where we incorporated visual glitches to make it easier for audiences to read.

These things, combined with the eyes adapting and transforming, the neurons firing life into the brain and the heart turning into a human heart, formed the backbone of the project.

The initial world was created from scratch in Unreal Engine, and we relied on game blocks we designed to construct every single bit you see, a bit of a kit of parts that we could construct with instead of prebuilt assets.

For the portal, we relied on more graphic and optical approaches to give it a more considered look.
